The hounskull bascinet, sometimes spelled houndskull, is one of the most recognizable knight helmets ever made. A tall, pointed steel skull, a cone-shaped visor out front, and pins at each side so the visor swings up and down. Flip it up and your fig's face is out for the parade, the parley, or the victory shout. Snap it down and they're sealed in and ready for the charge. It comes in two pieces, just like the real thing.

The story behind the hounskull

  • A dog's hood. The name comes from the German Hundsgugel, roughly "dog's hood," because the pointed visor looks like a snout. Plenty of people also call it the "pig-faced" helmet. Historians file it under the bascinet family.
  • Why the cone? A flat face catches a blow. A cone sends it sliding off. Swords, maces and lance points hitting the slanted visor or the pointed top get pushed to the side instead of landing full force.
  • Room to breathe. Pushing the visor out into a point also left a pocket of air in front of the knight's face, and gave space for the breathing holes. Inside a closed helmet in the middle of a fight, that mattered a lot.
  • Built to keep points out. The eye slits were the weak spot, so the steel around them was raised and shaped to turn a blade or spear point aside instead of letting it slide in.
  • The visor that comes off. Because it hung on pins, a knight could swing the visor up to look around between fights, or pull the pins and take it off completely.
  • Its time on the field. Hounskulls were a common sight on battlefields from the late 1300s into the early 1400s, the era of Agincourt in 1415. By the mid-1400s, newer helmets like the sallet began taking over.

Why builders like it

  • Two looks in one helmet. Visor up shows off the face print you picked. Visor down turns any fig into an anonymous, armored wall of steel.
  • Real shape, not a cartoon. The pointed skull, raised eye slits and breathing holes follow the real hounskull, so it looks right next to historical builds.
  • Fits any knightly order. Lions, dragons, crusaders or your own house colors, this style was worn by knights from every kingdom in Europe.
  • Easy to outfit a whole company. The price makes it simple to helmet every knight in the line, not just the captain.
